הדייגים היפנים צפויים לצוד אלף ליוויתנים, ביניהם זנים הנמצאים בסכנת הכחדה. בגרינפיס מבטיחים להפריע לספינות הדיג
ספינות דיג של יפן יפליגו מחר לציד ליוויתנים בדרום האוקיינוס השקט. מסע הדיג ייצא מדרום המדינה לכיוון אנטרטיקה, שם צפויים הדייגים לצוד כאלף ליוויתנים לפני שישובו בחזרה ליפן בשבוע הבא.

בין היתר, הדייגים יצודו גם 50 גדולי סנפיר, שלפי גורמים נמצאים בסכנת הכחדה, אחרי הפסקה של יותר מ-40 שנה. אף שהורשו לצוד רק כ-50 ליוויתנים גדולי סנפיר, הציד מעורר את זעמם של ארגוני סביבה וזכויות בעלי חיים רבים. בשנות ה-60 של המאה שעברה הוטל איסור על ציד הליוויתנים מזן זה, אולם הדייגים של יפן לחצו ללא הרף לחדש את הדיג, משום שלטענתם כיום יש כבר יותר מ-60 אלף ליוויתנים גדולי סנפיר. כמו כן צפויים הדייגים לצוד 50 ליוויתני קטלן. היתר יהיו לוויתנים אפורים, שלטענת יפן התרבו מספיק בכדי שניתן יהיה לצוד אותם.
ספינה של גרינפיס עוגנת מחוץ למים הטריטוריאלים של יפן וממתינה לספינות הציד היפניות במטרה להפריע להן. דובר של גרינפיס אמר, כי "לצוד בעלי חיים הנמצאים בסכנת הכחדה ולהגיש אותם אחר כך במסעדות בהסוואה של מחקר מדעי זה בעייתי. אין מקום לציד באנטרטיקה. זהו מקום של שלום ומדע אך הציד הוא לא מדע".
לטענת הארגון, המסע היה אמור לצאת לדרך כבר ביום חמישי אך נדחה ליום ראשון כדי למנוע מתיחות במהלך פגישת ראש ממשלת יפן יאסואו פוקודה עם נשיא ארה"ב ג'ורג' בוש שנערכה אמש בבית הלבן.
סירות של גרינפיס התעמתו בעבר עם ספינות הצי היפני במסע ציד קודם. אחת מהסירות נפגעה ממשחתת יפנית ואילו הפעילים שפכו חומצה על סיפונה של ספינת ציד. מעט לאחר מכן ספינת הציד עלתה באש ונתקעה במשך למעלה משבוע. יפן נאלצה להפסיק את הציד לראשונה מזה 20 שנה.
