בתום אחד המאבקים הסביבתיים הגדולים בשנים האחרונות, בהם השתתפה החברה להגנת הטבע, הוצאו מאילת כלובי הדגים וגידול הדגים שם ייפסק. ושונית האלמוגים כבר מראה סימני התאוששות
החברה להגנת הטבע מברכת על ההחלטה להוציא את כלובי הדגים, שהיוו את הגורם העיקרי לפגיעה בשונית. כלובי הדגים עמדו במוקד אחד המאבקים הסביבתיים הבולטים בישראל בשנים האחרונות. המאבק עלה לדרגים הממשלתיים בדיונים ובעריכת מספר מחקרים מדעיים לברור ההשפעות הסביבתיות של כלובי הדגים על איכות המים והאיזון הטבעי במפרץ אילת.
מאבק הארגונים הסביבתיים זכה לתמיכה משמעותית לפני מספר שנים, עם פרסום "מכתב המדענים", בו טענה קבוצת מדענים שכלובי הדגים הם מסכנים באופן משמעותי את שונית האלמוגים, וכי קיימת ירידה בכושר ההתחדשות של המושבות.
"ערדג" ו"דג סוף" הן שתי חוות לגידול דגים בים באילת, שהוקמו בשנת 1995 ומוקמו בראש מפרץ אילת סמוך לחוף הצפוני. גורמים שונים הביאו לזיהום המפרץ אולם כולם, מלבד מגדלי הדגים, פעלו לצמצומו. כלובי גידול הדגים לא רק שלא צמצמו, אלא אף הגדילו במרוצת השנים את פעילותם. מרבית המומחים שבחנו את הסוגיה קבעו כי כלובי גידול הדגים מהווים את ה"תורם" העיקרי לתמותת האלמוגים ולהעדר התחדשות של מושבותיהם.
כלובי הדגים באילת
דגי הדניס, להם ערך מסחרי רב, מעדיפים לגדול במי ים מלוחים, חמימים ושקטים. כדי לגדלם בישראל, חיפשו המגדלים ומצאו את מפרץ אילת כמקום אידיאלי. הדגיגים גדלים בתחילה בבריכות יבשתיות ורק בהמשך מעבירים אותם לכלובים ימיים. רבבות הדגים הללו הוזנו בטונות של מזון דגים, שחלק ניכר ממנו שקע לקרקעית יחד עם הפרשות הדגים. מדובר במאסה של דגה: מדי שנה יוצאו מהמפרץ כ- 3,000 טון דגים!
מדענים קבעו, שכלובי הדגים הם התורמים הגדולים ביותר של נוטריאנטים (חנקן וזרחן), הגורמים לתמותת האלמוגים ולהעדר התחדשות של מושבותיהם. גם אגף הדייג במשרד החקלאות מצא כי חומרי הדישון (מזון ולשלשלת דגים) המופרשים למי המפרץ, יוצרים תגובת שרשרת הפוגעת באיכות מי הים, ומאיצה את קריסת השונית, על מגוון בעלי החיים המאכלסים אותה וחיים סביבה. להשלכות סביבתיות אלו ישנה השפעה גדולה יותר במקום כה רגיש וייחודי כמו ראש מפרץ אילת, המקיים מערכת אקולוגית עדינה הרגישה במיוחד לשינויים באיכות המים.
לאור נתונים אלו החל כאמור המאבק ציבורי נגד כלובי הדגים להצלת שונית האלמוגים במפרץ אילת - שהסתיים לאחרונה בניצחון הציבור והארגונים הסביבתיים. בתהליך שלווה על ידי התחנה למניעת זיהום ים אגף ים וחופים המשרד להגנת הסביבה ואגף הדייג, קיימו חוות הדגים באילת את החלטת הממשלה וכלובי הדגים הוצאו ממימי מפרץ אילת. ושונית האלמוגים - כבר מראה סימני התאוששות!
